A while ago I ordered three naturalization records from the National Archives branch in New York. It took me a while to getting around to scan them. This is the naturalization record of John B Oliver, my 3x great-grandfather. He immigrated from Galway, Ireland to NYC and then San Francisco in the late 1840s. He was naturalized at the Common Pleas Court on 23 Oct 1849.

The record states he was living at 283 3rd Avenue in New York County and his witness was Patrick M Betton. The finding aid for the diaries of John’s brother, Dennis J Oliver gives a chronology of his residencies and while staying in New York, Denis lived at 283 3rd Avenue in Manhattan and left New York in early 1849. This confirms the identity of John Bartholomew Oliver in this naturalization record. John must have followed his older brother once he established the paint business.
