My grandaunt Freda, passed away January 18, 2009. I never met her, she unfortunately died of Parkinson’s disease at her daughter’s house in Rowley. My mom went to a service for on January 31 in Marblehead.

Freda Marie Anderson Whitmore was born on June 13, 1920 in Marblehead. Freda graduated from Marblehead High School in 1938 and from Pine Manor College and Edgewood Park College. She worked at R.H. Stearns in Boston before marrying John Benson Whitmore in 1944, her husband of 61 years who died September 30, 2004. Being an advocate of excellence in education, Freda was very active in her children’s schools. She served as President of the Parents Committee and on the Board of Trustees at Shore Country Day School and helped to create the Essex County Cookbook as a fundraiser for the school. Freda was an avid tennis player and outdoor enthusiast. She enjoyed skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain and sailing the coast of Maine and Cape Cod with her beloved family and dear friends. Freda was a founding member of the Merry Mixers to benefit North Shore Children’s Hospital in Salem, a member of the Junior League of Boston and the Thread and Needle Society in Salem. She was a founding member of the Driftwood Garden Club of Marblehead and an active member of the Club of Small Garden of Marblehead Neck. As an accomplished painter of oils and watercolors, she was a member of the Marblehead Arts Association, the North Shore Arts Association, and was a Copley Artist in the Copley Society of Boston. Freda enjoyed her association with the Cape Ann Watercolor Painters for many years. Her artwork is in collections throughout the United States.

Freda was the beloved sister of Alden H Anderson, Dexter J Anderson, and Virginia A. Currier. She leaves her five children, Devon A. W. Hildreth, John A Whitmore, and his wife Wade, James H.A. Whitmore, and his wife Theresa, R. Danby Whitmore, and Jeffrey B. Whitmore and his wife Jenifer, her 15 grandchildren, Rachel Whitmore, Eliza Denitto and Her Husband James, Catherine McGoldrick and her husband Micheal, Nicole Hildreth, Micah Hildreth, John Hildreth, John Whitmore, Emily Whitmore, Abeda Whitmore, Anika Whitmore, Anders Whitmore, Sara Whitmore, Saba Whitmore, Alexander Whitmore, and Hunter Whitmore, as well as 5 great-grand children: Sam Whitmore, Taylor Denitto, Jack Denitto, Lily McGoldrick and Kate McGoldrick.
