Using ancestry.com, finding the Olswang family in the census records was no problem as the people listed in the household with the information from the letter1 I previously posted about. What I found interesting was the discrepancies in birth place for Jacob Olswang. In 1900, I find them Jacob Olswang recorded as being born in Russia in July 1872 as well as his parents2. In 1910, Jacob Olswang is recorded as being born in Russia in 18783. Now in 1920, I find the same Jacob Olswang born in Germany along with his Parents in 18734. In 1930, the same Jacob Olswang is recorded as being born in Lithuania in 18755.
I have not 100% confirmed there are all the same Jacob Olswangs, but information about the other people in the household, leads me to believe they are. The birthplaces make me wonder about the territorial changes in Europe.
My best inference was that he was born in what was the original sovereign state of Lithuania, but throughout Lithuania’s history, it’s sovereignty was dissolved by the Russian and German empires of the 19th century and had discrepancies over the Lithuanian territory. Learning the town where he came from, might better help this search and give more historical context.
